Meet Autumn: Fine Line, Colour and Surrealism Tattoos at Rose & Thorn Toowoomba

If you've scrolled through the Rose & Thorn Instagram and stopped on a tiny bee floating under a balloon, a glittering disco-ball cherry or a frog in a wizard's robe, there's a good chance you were looking at Autumn's work. Autumn is one of the artists at Rose & Thorn Tattoo Studio in Toowoomba, and her tattoos have a way of making people smile, look twice and then ask, "Who did that?"
Here's a closer look at who she is, what she loves to tattoo, and what it's like to sit in her chair.
Who is Autumn?
Autumn learnt her craft at Rose & Thorn, working alongside studio owner and senior artist Melinda, and she has been building her skills in the tattoo scene since 2023. In that time she has built a loyal and growing clientele, and a reputation for perfectionism and a seriously steady hand.
People who've been tattooed by Autumn tend to mention the same things: how calm and friendly she is, how honest she is about what will and won't work, and how much laughter fills the studio while she works. Conversations in her chair range from tattoos to the mysteries of the universe, so don't be surprised if you walk out with a new tattoo and a new theory about aliens.
You can follow her work on Instagram at @autumn_moon_tattoos.
Autumn's tattoo styles
Autumn works across several styles, and the common thread is detail. She's been described as working like a "human printer", with clean lines, smooth blends and solidly packed colour.
Fine line
Delicate, precise and elegant, fine line tattoos suit small, meaningful pieces, script and dainty designs. Fine line work needs a steady hand and a careful eye for how lines will settle over time, which is exactly where Autumn's attention to detail shines.
Colour and micro realism
Some of Autumn's most recognisable pieces are small but packed with detail: a rainbow-sheened chess knight, a blue butterfly on the wrist, a stingray gliding across an arm. If you love bold, bright colour tattoos that still look refined, her portfolio is worth a long look.

Realism, black work and portraits
Autumn also tattoos realism, black work and portraits. If you're thinking about a realism or portrait tattoo, she'll talk you through what level of detail suits the size and placement you have in mind.
Surrealism: her favourite
Surrealism is Autumn's preferred style, and it's where her imagination really runs wild. She blends realistic characters and scenes with unexpected animals and objects, so the result is whimsical, a little bit strange and always thought-provoking. She draws inspiration from the cosmos, aliens and the mysteries of life, and she loves mixing a touch of cute with a touch of spooky. It's no wonder she's been likened to the "Dalí" of tattooing in Toowoomba.

What to expect at an appointment with Autumn
One of the things clients appreciate most about Autumn is that she never leaves you guessing.
A thorough consult first. Autumn starts her appointments with a proper consultation. She covers how your tattoo will heal, how your skin and the ink will age over time, and any design limitations to be aware of.
Open and honest advice. Autumn will tell you what's achievable before you begin, and what your options are if an idea needs adjusting (for example, if a design is too detailed for the size you want). That way you stay in full control of the final result, and you get a tattoo that will still look great years from now.
Original art, drawn for you. Like all of the artists at Rose & Thorn, Autumn creates custom designs made for you, not copied from someone else. She takes real pride in her designs and builds pieces to stand the test of time.
A calm, private space. Rose & Thorn is a private tattoo studio at 144 Campbell Street, Toowoomba 4350, so you can relax and enjoy the process without the hustle of a walk-in shop.
