Black and grey Fear and Loathing portrait tattoo by Autumn, Rose & Thorn Tattoo Studio Toowoomba
Realism & Portrait Tattoos in Toowoomba
A great realism tattoo does more than copy a photo. It captures depth, texture and feeling, so the face or scene on your skin looks like it could step right off it. At Rose & Thorn Tattoo Studio in Toowoomba, black and grey realism and portraits are at the heart of what we do.
Whether you're dreaming of a portrait of someone you love, an icon who means something to you, or a full black and grey sleeve, our realism artists will work closely with you to bring it to life.
Black and grey realism with Melinda
Melinda, our studio owner and senior artist, is renowned for her expertise in black and grey realism. Her keen eye for shading and texture brings a real depth to her work, from breathtaking portraits to intricate designs and full sleeves.
Melinda is our go-to for hyper-realistic portraits. Her portfolio features celebrities and clients who are stars in their own right, from Australian icons to world-famous musicians. (Don't miss her fun antics with Teddy Swims on our Instagram!)
She is also our expert for large scale projects, including full back pieces, torsos, and arm or leg sleeves. From the first consultation, Melinda works closely with you so your design lines up with your vision.
Realism, micro realism and surrealism with Autumn
Autumn specialises in realism, portraits, micro realism, surrealism, fine line and colour. With attention to detail that the studio likens to a "human printer", she creates pieces that are visually stunning and deeply meaningful.
Her favourite style, surrealism, blends realistic characters and scenes with unexpected animals and objects for a whimsical yet thought-provoking result. Autumn gives every client a thorough consultation covering healing, skin, how ink ages and what is achievable, so you understand your options before you begin.
Looking for something smaller? Micro realism packs intricate detail into a compact design, and both Melinda and Autumn are great picks.
Planning your portrait tattoo
Portraits rely on detail, and detail needs space. Even the most highly skilled artist can't fit a whole portrait, with all the detail in a photo, onto a small area or somewhere like a kneecap. Your artist will give you honest advice on the size and placement that will give you the best result, both now and in years to come.
A few tips for a great portrait:
-
Choose the clearest photo you have. Sharp, well-lit photos with visible detail in the face work best.
-
Think about size early. Larger portraits allow more detail and age better.
-
Be open to your artist's ideas. We ask clients to allow creative freedom so the finished tattoo is of the highest quality.
-
Upload everything with your enquiry. Add your reference photos and a photo of the area you'd like tattooed, including any existing tattoos or scars.
Every design is created for you and is ready to review on the morning of your appointment.
How much does a realism or portrait tattoo cost?
Our studio has a minimum price of $250. Each artist operates as a sole trader and sets their own daily rate and quote. Realism and portrait pieces are priced on size and detail, which also determines how many sessions or days your tattoo will need.
Send us your concept, reference photos, measurements and placement, and your artist will give you an estimated timeframe and price.
To secure your booking, a minimum deposit of $200 is required for each day you book. Your deposit is deducted from the total at your final session.
Experience matters as much as the tattoo
Realism sessions can be long, so comfort counts. Rose & Thorn is a light, private and tranquil studio, and we'll stop for breaks when you need them.
We're a fully licensed and insured studio (licence #4650307). We follow strict QLD Government health regulations, and our artists hold Infection Control Certificates.
Realism & portrait tattoo FAQs
Can you tattoo a portrait of my family member? Yes. Portraits of loved ones are some of the most meaningful pieces we create. Send the clearest photo you have, and your artist will advise on the best size and placement.
Do you do realism in colour? Autumn is our colour realism artist. See our colour tattoos page for more.
How many sessions will my sleeve need? That depends on the size and detail of your design. Your artist will estimate how many days your piece needs when they quote. A minimum $200 deposit applies to each day booked.
Can I use numbing cream? We prefer you don't, as it can alter the skin and affect healing, but we respect your choice. Numbing cream voids our touch-up policy, and it can wear off during long sessions. We stock a brand we've found works best. It needs to be applied 90 minutes before your appointment.
How far ahead do I need to book? Our artists are often booked out two to three months in advance, so get in early, especially for multi-session projects.
