Thinking about your first tattoo? Feeling excited, nervous, or a bit of both? That's completely normal, and you're in the right place. Rose & Thorn Tattoo Studio is a bright, calm and private studio in Toowoomba, designed to make you feel safe, comfortable and confident in your decision.

 

We've all been in your shoes. We remember the nerves of being tattooed for the first time, and we've built our studio to take the intimidation out of it.

 

Not your typical tattoo shop

No dark rooms. No intimidating energy. No rushed work. Unlike studios that blast music and are packed with people, Rose & Thorn offers a light, private and tranquil environment. We're an appointment-only studio, so there are no walk-ins interrupting your session and your artist's attention stays on you.

How it works, step by step

1. Send us your idea. Fill out our booking enquiry form with a description of your tattoo, the size in centimetres, placement, reference images and a photo of the area. Add a preferred artist if you have one.

 

2. Get your quote. Your artist will review your idea and let you know an estimated timeframe and price. If anything is unclear, they may book you in for a quick 15-minute consultation.

 

3. Secure your date. A deposit (minimum $200 per day booked, usually by bank transfer) locks in your appointment. It comes off the cost of your tattoo on the day.

 

4. Review your design. Your custom design is drawn in advance and ready for you to see on the morning of your appointment. We'll fine-tune it together, check sizing and placement, and only start when you're happy.

 

5. Get tattooed. Your artist will talk you through everything, check in with you and stop for breaks whenever you need them.

 

6. Aftercare. You'll go home with our aftercare fact sheet, and we're here if you have questions while you heal.

 

Choosing your first tattoo

Lots of people start with something small and meaningful: a fine line name or date, a birth flower, a few words of script or a tiny micro tattoo. Every artist at Rose & Thorn is trained in fine line, so these are a lovely place to start.

 

Your artist will give you honest advice on size and placement so your tattoo looks great now and still reads clearly years from now. Sometimes that means going a little bigger than you first imagined. We'll always explain why.

 

How to prepare for your first tattoo

• Sleep well in the days leading up to your appointment

• Eat healthy and avoid alcohol beforehand

• Have a big breakfast on the day. Load up on carbs!

• Bring snacks and entertainment. Headphones and music are always calming

• Tell us about any medical conditions or medications when you book, so we can keep you safe

• Be upfront about your nerves. Our artists are trained to be empathetic and will talk you through the process

 

Does it hurt?

Honestly? Yes, a little. How much depends on your pain tolerance, your general health and wellbeing, the area being tattooed and how well you prepare. Your artist will tune in to how you're feeling and we'll take breaks as needed.

 

If you're considering numbing cream, have a chat with your artist first. We prefer it isn't used as it can affect the skin and healing, but we respect your choice. We stock a brand at reception that we've found works best. It needs to be applied 90 minutes before your appointment. Using numbing cream voids our touch-up policy.

 

How much will my first tattoo cost?

Our studio has a minimum price of $250, and each artist sets their own rates. Your quote depends on the size and detail of your design. For a lower price point, ask about our apprentice tattoos, which are discounted while our apprentices train.

 

We accept cash, direct deposit and Rose & Thorn gift vouchers. We don't offer finance.

 

First tattoo FAQs

How old do I need to be? You must be 18. In Queensland we can't tattoo anyone under 18, even with parent or guardian consent, and we may ask for proof of age.

 

Can I just walk in? We're a strictly appointment-only studio, so we don't take walk-ins or drop-in consultations. Fill out the booking form or send us a text and we'll get back to you.

 

Is the studio safe and licensed? Yes. We're fully licensed and insured (licence #4650307), follow strict QLD Government health regulations, and our artists hold Infection Control Certificates.

 

What if I need to reschedule? You can reschedule once without losing your deposit if you give your artist at least 7 days' notice.

 

Is the studio accessible? Yes, our floor layout can accommodate a wheelchair. Please mention any access needs when booking.
