Colour Tattoos in Toowoomba

Bold, bright and full of life. Colour tattoos can be soft and dreamy or rich and saturated, and done well they bring a design to life like nothing else. At Rose & Thorn Tattoo Studio in Toowoomba, colour realism is one of the styles we're proudest of.

From an iridescent manta ray gliding across the skin to a vivid floral piece or a cosmic, otherworldly design, our artists create custom colour tattoos made just for you.

Colour realism with Autumn

Rose & Thorn proudly introduces our colour realism artist, Autumn (@autumn_moon_tattoos). Autumn brings an unparalleled attention to detail and an expert understanding of colour to every piece.

Autumn honed her skills during her apprenticeship at Rose & Thorn under the guidance of Melinda, and specialises in fine line, realism, surrealism, micro realism and colour. If you're after a tattoo with clean lines, smooth blends or solidly applied colour, Autumn is the artist for you.

Her preferred style, surrealism, blends realistic characters and scenes with unexpected animals and objects. Likened to the "Dali" of tattooing in Toowoomba, Autumn draws inspiration from the cosmos, aliens and the mysteries of life, mixing cuteness and spookiness into her imaginative designs.

Just as importantly, Autumn is open and honest. She gives every client a thorough consultation at the start of their appointment covering tattoo healing, skin, how ink ages and design limitations, so you understand what's achievable and what your options are before you begin.

Traditional colour tattoos

Love bold lines and classic colour? Traditional work is known for strong outlines and solid colour. Our apprentice Tegan lives and breathes all things traditional, so send us your idea and we'll match you with the right artist.

Colour tattoo ideas

Colour works beautifully across many styles. Some ideas to inspire you:

  • Colour realism: animals, sea life, flowers and objects with lifelike depth

  • Surrealism: dreamlike scenes mixing realistic elements with the unexpected

  • Florals: vivid blooms, from soft pastels to rich, saturated petals

  • Traditional and neo-trad: bold outlines with strong, classic colour

  • Cosmic and whimsical designs: planets, galaxies, aliens and a touch of spooky-cute

Making colour last

Colour tattoos look their best when they're designed with longevity in mind. Your artist will talk you through how colour heals and ages on your skin, which placements suit colour work, and how size affects detail. That's why consultations matter so much to us.

Aftercare matters too. After your tattoo you'll get our aftercare fact sheet, which you can also download from our FAQ page. We stock aftercare products in our online shop.

A note on numbing cream: some people find certain numbing creams reduce the depth of colour in their tattoo, depending on their skin. We prefer it isn't used, but we respect your choice. If you do use it, our touch-up policy is void.

How much does a colour tattoo cost?

Our studio minimum is $250. Each artist operates as a sole trader and sets their own daily rate and quote. Colour work is priced on the size and detail of your design, which also determines how many sessions you'll need.

Send us your concept, reference images, size and placement, and your artist will give you an estimated timeframe and price. A minimum deposit of $200 for each day booked secures your appointment and is deducted at your final session.

Colour tattoo FAQs

Who does colour realism at Rose & Thorn? Autumn is our colour realism artist. For traditional work, ask us about Tegan.

Can you add colour to my existing black and grey tattoo? Possibly. Upload a clear photo of your existing tattoo with your booking form and your artist will let you know what's achievable.

Does colour hurt more than black and grey? Pain depends on your personal tolerance, your health and wellbeing, the area being tattooed and how long you're sitting. We'll stop for breaks whenever you need them.

Will you copy a colour tattoo I found online? We don't replicate other artists' work, but we love reference images as inspiration. Your artist will create a design that's unique to you.

How far ahead should I book with Autumn? Our artists are often booked out two to three months in advance, so get your enquiry in early.
