Pet Portrait Tattoos in Toowoomba
Our pets are family. They're there for the big moments and the quiet everyday ones, and they love us without conditions. A pet portrait tattoo is a beautiful way to celebrate that bond, whether your best friend is curled up at home right now or has crossed the rainbow bridge.
At Rose & Thorn Tattoo Studio in Toowoomba, we create custom pet tattoos that capture the personality that makes your pet yours: the tilt of the head, the soulful eyes, the scruffy ear that never sits flat.
Realistic pet portraits with Melinda
Melinda, our studio owner and senior artist, is our go-to artist for capturing the essence of your beloved pets. Renowned for her black and grey realism, she brings your furry friends to life through stunningly realistic pet portrait tattoos, so you can carry them with you wherever you go.
Melinda's keen eye for shading and texture is what makes a realistic pet portrait work: the softness of fur, the shine in an eye, the little details that make your pet instantly recognisable.
Prefer something more delicate?
Not everyone wants a full realistic portrait. A fine line pet tattoo can be just as meaningful: a simple outline, a paw print, your pet's name, or a soft, minimal sketch-style design.
All of our artists are trained in fine line, and you'll find fine line pet work in our gallery, including a fine line dog tattoo by Nakara, who specialises in fine line, blackwork and illustrative styles. If you'd like something fun or quirky that shows off your pet's personality, Nakara's illustrative style is a great fit.

Choosing the right photo
The photo you choose is the most important part of a realistic pet portrait. For the best result:
-
Choose a sharp, clear photo. Zoom in on the eyes. If they're blurry, the tattoo will be harder to get right.
-
Go for good, natural light. Avoid heavy shadows, flash glare or filters.
-
Get eye level with your pet. Photos taken at your pet's level usually make the most natural portraits.
-
Show their personality. The expression you love most is the one you'll want on your skin.
-
Send a few options. Your artist can help you choose, or combine details from several photos.
Upload your photos with your booking enquiry, along with a photo of the area you'd like tattooed.
Size and placement
Realistic portraits need room for detail. Even the most skilled artist can't fit every detail from a photo into a tiny space. Your artist will give you honest advice on size and placement so your pet portrait looks amazing when it's fresh and still reads clearly years from now. Popular placements for pet portraits include the forearm, upper arm, calf and thigh.
How much does a pet portrait tattoo cost?
Our studio has a minimum price of $250. Each artist works as a sole trader and sets their own rates, so the price depends on your artist and the size and detail of your design. Realistic portraits usually take longer than simple fine line pieces.
Send us your photos, the size you have in mind and your placement, and your artist will give you an estimated timeframe and price. A minimum $200 deposit per day booked secures your appointment and comes off the cost of your tattoo.
Pet portrait tattoo FAQs
Can I bring my pet to my appointment? Unfortunately not. Queensland health requirements mean animals aren't permitted in tattoo studios. Your photos are all we need.
Can you combine more than one pet in a tattoo? Yes, it's possible with enough space. Upload photos of each pet and let us know your size and placement, and your artist will advise what's achievable.
Can I get a pet memorial tattoo? Absolutely. A pet portrait is a beautiful way to remember a pet who has passed. See our memorial tattoos page for more ideas.
Will my design be sent to me beforehand? Designs aren't sent out in advance. Your design will be ready for review on the morning of your appointment, and we'll fine-tune it with you on the day.
How far in advance should I book with Melinda? Our artists are often booked out two to three months in advance, so we recommend getting your enquiry in early.
