Memorial Tattoos in Toowoomba

Some tattoos are about remembering. A memorial tattoo keeps someone you love close: a parent, a partner, a child, a friend or a beloved pet. It's a way to carry their story with you every day.

At Rose & Thorn Tattoo Studio in Toowoomba, we know these pieces come with big emotions. We've created a calm, private and compassionate space where you can take your time, share your story, and leave with a tattoo that truly honours the person you've lost.

Memorial tattoo ideas

There's no right or wrong way to remember someone. Some of the memorial pieces our clients choose include:

  • Hand-written script. Words from a card or letter, recreated in your loved one's own handwriting

  • Portraits. A realistic black and grey portrait that captures their likeness and essence

  • Names, dates and Roman numerals. Simple, fine line details that hold a lot of meaning

  • Birth flowers and florals. Their birth flower or a favourite bloom

  • Pet memorials. A portrait of a much-loved furry family member

  • Symbols and custom designs. Something that represents a shared memory, hobby or place

If you're not sure what you want yet, that's okay. Tell us about the person and what you'd like to remember, and your artist will help you shape the idea.

"Now I get to see it and be reminded of their love every day"

One of our clients, Leah, came to Melinda a short while after her dad passed. She brought special words from the last birthday card her parents gave her, in her mum's handwriting, written before her mum passed away suddenly. In Leah's words:

"Thanks to you, now I get to see it and be reminded of their love every day. Thank you so much." (Leah O'Malley)

That's what memorial tattoos are about for us.

Which artist is right for your memorial tattoo?

The best artist depends on the style of tattoo you have in mind:

  • Portraits of loved ones: Melinda, our owner and senior artist, is our go-to for hyper-realistic black and grey portraits. Autumn also specialises in realism and portraits.

  • Pet memorial portraits: Melinda is our go-to artist for realistic pet portraits.

  • Handwriting, names, dates and fine line florals: every artist at Rose & Thorn is trained in fine line and can create sentimental hand-written script, names, dates and florals. Autumn, Nakara and our apprentice Kayla all work in fine line.

If you're unsure, ask us which artist suits. Mention it's a memorial piece on your booking form and we'll guide you.

Preparing your memorial tattoo

A little preparation helps your artist do justice to your idea:

  • Handwriting: take a clear, well-lit photo of the writing, flat and straight on. Upload it with your booking form.

  • Portraits: choose the sharpest, clearest photo you have, with good light on the face. Portraits need enough size to hold detail, and your artist will advise on placement.

  • Placement: think about whether you'd like it visible every day or somewhere more private.

Your design is drawn in advance and ready for you to review on the morning of your appointment. We'll make adjustments with you on the day so it feels exactly right.

A gentle, supportive space

It's completely normal to feel emotional during a memorial tattoo. We'll take breaks whenever you need them. Rose & Thorn is a light, private and tranquil studio, not a loud, crowded shop. If something would help you feel more comfortable, just let us know.

We're fully licensed and insured (licence #4650307), we follow strict QLD health regulations, and our artists hold Infection Control Certificates.

How much does a memorial tattoo cost?

Our studio minimum is $250. Each artist works as a sole trader and sets their own rates. Your quote will depend on the size, detail and style of your design, and larger realism pieces may need more than one session. A minimum deposit of $200 for each day booked secures your appointment and is deducted from your final total.

Gift vouchers can be used toward tattoos with any of our artists (but not as a deposit), so they're a thoughtful gift for someone planning a memorial piece.

Memorial tattoo FAQs

Can you recreate my loved one's handwriting exactly? Yes, this is one of our most meaningful requests. A clear photo of the writing helps your artist capture it faithfully.

Will it hurt? Tattoos can be uncomfortable, and how much depends on your pain tolerance, the placement and how well you prepare. Get a good night's sleep, eat a big breakfast and avoid alcohol beforehand. Your artist will check in with you and stop for breaks as needed.

Can I add to an existing memorial tattoo? Often, yes. Upload a photo of your existing tattoo with your enquiry and your artist will advise.

How soon can I get in? Our artists are often booked out two to three months in advance. We share last-minute cancellation spots on Instagram (@roseandthorntattoostudio).

Honour their memory

When you're ready, fill out our booking enquiry form. Share your story, upload your photos or handwriting, and let us know if you have a preferred artist. Have a question first? Send us a text and we'll get back to you.
